We have no shortage of barbeque restaurants in Douglas County and all across West Georgia for that matter. With that said, I’ve found a new personal favorite and I feel compelled to tell you to go west. Just across the county line in Downtown Villa Rica awaits some of the finest barbeque that I have ever sunk my teeth into. I was familiar with a small barbecue restaurant in this location in the past, but on one hot summer day when I was driving by at lunch time, the aroma got the best of me. The smell coming out of the smoker permeated the air of downtown Villa Rica and the rest is history. I have a new favorite place for barbeque and it is well worth the short drive from Douglasville.
The place that I am speaking of is Evan’s Barbeque Company located at 342 W. Bankhead Highway in Villa Rica. It’s a small and quaint place that will take you back in time with its country, yet eclectic atmosphere. With that said, don’t be discouraged by the small building in the front, they’ve got plenty more seating in the cabin out back. They also have a drive-thru and it’s my understanding that the same pallet pleasing favorites that you get inside can be catered for parties of almost any size.
I’ve since taken the family back several times and I think we’ve just about covered everything on the menu and we have loved it all. Their barbeque is not fatty or greasy like you get at some places. The quality meat is smoked on the premises daily by some of the nicest people and most overqualified Chefs that you will ever meet. Owner’s Michael and Alicia White have a combined 40+ years in the business. A graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, Michael honed his culinary skills for nine years at the world renowned 21 Club in New York City, followed by four years at The Capital City Club in Atlanta. Alicia worked under several celebrity chefs in New York while attending the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan. The restaurant is family owned and named after the couple’s 6 yr. old son Evan.
There are many things that you will need to try, but I must warn you that you will be challenged to find a singular favorite. You must start your meal with their infamous fried Barbeque Eggrolls (pictured above). Other must haves are the Boss Hogg, Barbeque Spaghetti, Nana’s Barbeque Salad and Smoked Cobbler for dessert. Half and full pales of mouth-watering ribs are available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and Evan’s has some of the best smoked or fried chicken wings you will ever find.
