One business in Douglas County celebrates its 100 year anniversary this year. Jenkins Barber Shop reached that milestone in 2010, making it one of the oldest family owned businesses in West Georgia.
The shop has been owned by the Jenkins Family ever since it was founded by Nacy Jenkins in 1910, as an eight-chair shop in Griffin. It later moved to the Bolton Road area, then to Mableton in the 1960s. Copeland Jenkins, Nacy’s son, still owns the Mableton shop, and his son Mike owns two locations in Douglasville. Mike also opened the newest location in Villa Rica in 1998.
Things have not changed all that much since 1910, which is kind of refreshing to see. Patrons still come in, sit down in a chair, grab a magazine, and get a haircut and a straight razor shave, topped off with steaming towels, hot lather, and a slash of after shave.
Many current customers remember coming to Jenkins Barber shop as a kid, so it is kind of one of those “warm fuzzy” moments. Mike says, “It’s a family tradition for our customers, as well as our family”.
All of the barbers are continually trained in current as well as old-fashioned styles. Customers of Jenkins Barber Shop range in age from 6 months to 98 years.
All of the shops are open from 8 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday, and from 8 AM to 5 PM on Saturday. Douglasville locations are at 7214 Douglas Boulevard (in the Topps Center – 770.942.5099), and 2108 Fairburn Road (about ½ mile south of I-20 – 770.577.5583). The Mableton location is at 5590 Mableton Parkway (in the K-Mart Center – 770.948.2851).
